Tenant empowerment
Putting tenants at the heart of decision-making
As a housing Community Mutual, RCT Homes is determined to ensure that tenants are fully informed about our activities and plans and have every opportunity to play a key role in RCT Homes’ decision-making. We call this ‘tenant empowerment’ – making sure that tenants have the power to make informed decisions about their homes.
Tenants have already played a crucial hands-on role in RCT Homes’ operational decision-making:RCT Homes won the UK’s top award for community relations for the unique information campaign that led to the setting up of RCT Homes. The campaign – which was planned and carried out with tenants – beat off competition from some of the country’s biggest public relations agencies to win the 2008 CIPR President’s Grand Prix Award.RCT Homes then took tenant involvement a stage further in its process to appoint contractors to carry out the multi-million pound refurbishment of our homes. A workshop in November 2007 involving dozens of tenants and staff decided that the standard of workmanship, how the contractors conduct themselves and their willingness to listen to tenants would play a big role in deciding who was appointed.
Tenants evaluated the bids, undertook visits to sites all over the UK where they could see the contractors at work and sat on the panels that interviewed the contractors. In total, RCT Homes tenants spent more than 150 days evaluating the bids
